redirect question

  • I’m having a bit of a strange problem with my website. When I go to:

    https://recycledcognition.com

    I get to my site, but the Google AdSense targeting is horribly off. Nearly every add that comes up is for auto warranties even though I don’t have any such info on my page. But when I go to:

    https://www.recycledcognition.com

    The ads are pretty much spot on given the content on my front page. I was always under the impression that both ways of entering my site were the same — after all, they both load the front page. But it Google is clearly making a distinction. So…

    How do I redirect the former to the latter? In other words, how do I make sure that people who go to recycledcognition.com get redirected to the url with the www qualifier on it? I’m on an Apache server with mod_rewrite, so I’m assuming that I can just add a rewrite rule to .htaccess, but I can’t make it work. Any suggestions?

  • If your server offers Cpanel, do the redirect from there. Works infinitely better than trying to dig out what’s wrong with a rewrite rule….

    Thanks. Made the change in cpanel, but now I get an error saying that the redirection limit for this url has been exceeded. Not sure what to make of that.

    Ask your host what’s up with that. I had to have my host make a change in something when that sort of thing happened to me on one of my sites.

    Okay, I posted over at my web provider’s support forum, but I think I might know what’s going on… Perhaps it’s getting thrown into a loop wherein it keeps redirecting from one to the other. Assuming that my server, unlike Google, truly treats these as equivalent, then it could be in an endless loop.

    Still no idea how to fix the problem, though.

    Sounds logical – I really don’t know what Sharon did to fix whatever it was (this has been about 5 years ago now). A loop would definitely cause anguish on the server though!

    I still, btw, don’t see your goog text ads…. that’s just TOO weird!

    Not to hijack my own thread, but is there any chance that you are using a custom usercontent.css file to block ads? See:

    for details. This is an incredibly powerful and effective way to block ads, and it’s definitely effective against AdSense (based on the size/shape of the ad blocks, I believe).

    I was running it awhile back and had forgotten about it. Thus, in rare cases when I actually wanted to see ads, I couldn’t. It took me awhile to figure out that this was the cause.

    Nope. Never heard of it until just now, and thank you kindly for the link…. Honest, I have no text ad blocking of any sort in place. I have to tell you this too: I just checked in IE and opera, and I don’t see them in either of them either. And I definitely have nothing blocking them, because I normally don’t use them “live”…. AND in fact, my IE is still the XP SP1 version.

    I see adsense text ads just fine on other sites I frequent. No clue what it is on yours.
