    Hello,

We’ve been using the Yoast SEO plugin for a while, and about 7-8 months ago, we activated the option to redirect media URLs to file URL.

We also have Search Index Purge plugin activated. However, Google Search Console keeps on returning the “Submitted URL not found (404)” error for our attachment URLs. At the beginning, we though it’d take some time, but far from getting better, the number of URLs affected by this error is growing.

How can we stop this from happening?

    Thanks

  • Hi @kiburisa,

We understand your concern, but these errors in the Google Search Console are what we expect to see the Search Index Purge plugin has removed the unwanted attachment URLs from Google. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that there’s a problem with your site.

The only reason why you are seeing 404 Not Found errors being reported on attachment URLs and not the 410 Deleted header is that Google Search Console reports 410 as a 404 when a URL no longer exists.

Since you’ve had the Search Index Purge plugin active for more than 6 months and we did not find any attachment page URLs in search results for your site, you can safely deactivate and uninstall the Search Index purge plugin.

To make sure that attachment pages do not reappear in search results, please go to SEO > Search Appearance > Media and be sure to set “Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?” to “Yes”.
