    Hi,

I have just finished developing this website for a client but the client would like to redirect the site to a new domain name.

Please note that the new is a domain name only and the website files are physically hosted (and will remain as such) on the domain.

Before Christmas, the client set up the redirect from their web host admin panel, which broke the site completely (the frontend worked but there was no access to the wp-admin dashboard), so it was reverted. They want to give it another try again now.

Is there anything that I can do to ensure that this works this time around? What do I need to change in order to redirect to the new domain name successfully?

    Kind regards

    Anthony

  • If I am understanding you correctly, you need to do a find replace in the database and replace the old domain with the new one. Then make sure the server is configured correctly to point to the new domain.

Then go and point the old domain back to the registrars servers and set it to forward at the registrar’s side.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Davood,

Thanks for your reply. So if I understand you correctly, these changes will need to be made within the web host admin (i.e. find and replace in the database + repointing and forwarding to the new domain)? Or will I also need to make changes in the WordPress admin panel?

    Thanks again.

Hello Anthony, My apologies for the delay getting back to you. You’ll need to do a find/replace of your domain in the database. There are multiple migration plugins you can use to assist in this process or you can so it manually in your hosting providers control panel by using phpmyadmin to do the search replace function that it provides. I’d suggest looking at the duplicator plugin https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/duplicator/

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Davood,

No problem. I managed to get it working in the end. I used the Search and Replace plugin and asked the client’s web host to assist in repointing the necessary settings.

    Thanks for your help!

    Anthony
