Redirection breaks primary site

    As being asked for, I open a new topic.

    I’m having a main failure on my network (multisite with subdomains), that basically broke the primary domain.

    WordPress 3.3.1
    Network with subdomains
    WordPress MU Domain Mapping v0.5.4.2
    Redirection setup via cpanel (web host Hostgator)

    My intention was to redirect a subdomain.com to its brother subdomain.org. So I parked the .com and setup a redirection via cpanel (Hostgator) to the .org.

    Somehow something went wrong, and even if the subdomain.org is working fine, the primary site is broken. When I try to open a post, I’m redirected to subdomain.com – which is quite weird.

    So, since even the (otherwise excellent) Hostgator support couldn’t figure it out how to solve it, I’m rebuilding the whole network (not big deal). But I would really like to ask two things, before to proceed.

    1. Is the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin strictly necessary? I’ve read that with WordPress 3.1 is superfluous.

    2. What is the best practice for having a subdomain.com redirect to its counterpart subdomain.org? Setting up a redirect via cpanel, or mapping the two domains to the same subsite and then mapping one of the two as primary?

    I think the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin is great. If you need a guide on how to set that up I made a tutorial here. (I actually wrote that with HostGator in mind!)

    I wouldn’t recommend using the cpanel for redirects, there is a more “WordPress” friendly way of doing that. You could map them both to the same subsite and check one as primary – I believe that should work though I’ve never tried. IF that doesn’t work you could use your .htaccess to use a 301 redirect.

    May I ask you one more question? I assume so and thanks in advance if you get the time to answer.

    When, if I visit the Domain Mapping page of a site in the network (Dashboard > Tools > Domain Mapping), and I watch at the domains mapped with that site, I don’t have anymore site.primarysite.com but just a duplicated entry.

    I expected to have something like

    Primary Domain Delete
    [x] https://site.com
    [ ] https://site.primarysite.com

    Instead I’ve a duplicated entry

    Primary Domain Delete
    [x] https://site.com
    [ ] https://site.com

    Is this correct? It happens for all the sites mapped to a parked domain.

    By the way, I’ve mapped the domain I want to redirect with the relative site. So now I’ve this setup

    Primary Domain Delete
    [ ] https://site.com del
    [x] https://site.org
    [ ] https://site.org
