Reduce size of password box?

The password box on tabbed login widget is too long to fit beside the word “password” and appears underneath, like this:
Password:
[ ]Whereas, I would like it to show on the same line, like this:
Password: [ ]Can you tell me how I can shorten the length of the box please?
