Referer redirect after failed login not working

I have the plugin set up to redirect all users to “Referer” after login, which seems to be working fine when I successfully log in on the first try. If, however, I typo my password or something and it reloads the form with a validation error and I enter it correctly the second time, the original referer is lost in favor of wp-admin. I set up the plugin on a test site with a base WP theme and no other plugins enabled, so you can test here by looking at the original referer variable in the source:

Has this come up before or is there any workaround you know of to keep the referer across failed login attempts?
