    Hello,

Yesterday, I downloaded and implemented regenerate thumbnails for my site, in the hopes that by doing so, my images would be more compact and therefore easier to load.

What I didn’t expect was that after regenerating my images (and I regenerated ALL my images on my site ~ 1700 – stupidly on my behalf) was that when I entered my media library, nearly ALL of my images were completely black, or improperly-sized, and some of my older thumbnails were broken, gone, or missing.

Maybe I misunderstood the point of the plugin, but it was quite a shock to see that my media library was completely decimated of images after having regenerated them. Is there any way to undo this?

Also, the color gradient on my photos has changed – they’re much less vibrant and lively, as more sepia..

    Hey there!

It’s weird! If you are using the WordPress default features to include your media, they should have the same behavior when generating the thumbnails, because this plugin uses the wp_generate_attachment_metadata core function to regenerate them. This means that when you upload new media, they should have the same treatment when you’re regenerating them.

And it should only delete images when the option “Delete thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes in order to free up server space. This may result in broken images in your posts and pages.” is marked and you don’t use some sizes anymore.

Anyway, my suggestion to try getting your images back is to check if they are in your uploads folder, or getting it from some backup.

I really hope you can get your images back! And next time when you’re using a plugin for the first time, it’s highly recommended a backup because any plugin/theme conflict can cause unexpected behaviors. ??

    Thanks for your reply.

I honestly have no clue why there was this particular interaction with my photos – still haven’t really figured it out.

Yes, I’ve learned my lesson about backing up my site before making any major changes. It happens to everyone once, I think. Oh, well. Live and learn!
