Regenerate thumbnails doesn’t work

    I have a folder with pdf documents. I load the pdfs in there either from within MLF, or using FTP (when the files get a bit large and the MLF uploader times-out). I can then see the document in MLF, but with no thumbnail. I then select the document in MLF and select Regenerate Thumbnails” – and it says “Thumbnails have been regenerated for 0 images”.

    How do I get the thumbnails regenerated ?

    As the result indicated you will not get a thumbnail for the PDF
    Because it is not an image!.
    And as you indicated that you can see the document in MLF there is no problem!
    To see the file after uploading with FTP, you will need to synchronize the folder which contains the pdf !
    Then it will add the default image for documents, which states that it is a PDF file

    Peter – that makes perfect sense. However, somehow-or-other my predecessor loaded the pdfs into WordPress in such a manner that they ended-up with thumbnails. I then decided the place needed a bit more organisation and started using MLF (which is great) – and now all my uploads look like orphans with no thumbnails ??

    Anyway, no disaster if it can’t be done (just looks untidy).

    You will have to look in the folder, if there are any images. I doubt that, so in that case you can delete the thumbnails.
    Another way to fix this, is creating a new folder with MLF. Then move the pdf files into that folder. If there are links to pages, MLF does alter them to the new location. Then if there are no pdf files in the old folder, check with ftp if the folder still contains files. If not you can delete the thumbnails. In this way you will get a clean media list.

    If a time out occurs during a file upload, it is likely that you need to adjust your sites Maximum Execution Time setting. See this article on how to do that, https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-fatal-error-maximum-execution-time-exceeded-in-wordpress/. We recommend setting Maximum Execution Time to 300 seconds.
