I’ve read through a bunch of other forum threads that deal with similar problems, but I don’t think I’ve identified an exact similar issue to what I’m experiencing.

I require people to register to comment, mainly because I’m trying to build a user database that I can communicate with for ever expanding projects and some e-business stuff. Between that and Akismet, I’ve managed to keep comment spam to zero.

However, I’ve recently noticed a lot of spam registrations. I”m currently using the ‘Register-plus’ plugin from skullbit (https://skullbit.com/) for the registration page. Now, on this page, I require a first name, a last name, email, and a little checkbox that says ‘I am human’. I was about to go through the process of adding some challenge questions, when I noticed that it appears these registrations are bypassing this plugin somehow. They don’t come with a first name or last name, they don’t have to go through the verification process – they just appear. And the websites are invariably the same ones that the ‘Facebook Virus’ were – the one with the fake video (I’m on a mac, so I’m unaffected).

If anyone has any ideas on how they’re getting through, or how to stop them, please, let me know.

    Thanks.

    I figured it out.

I forgot about the BBpress installation, which was how they were getting through. Simply adding an htaccess redirect on bbpress’s registration sending it to wordpress’s has solved that problem. I strongly reccomend ‘Registration Plus’ as a plugin.
