• I’ve been getting a steady stream of new registered users on my site, but for some reason the last couple of days the are coming up unusual. I get notified that “Username” has joined with this [email]. Now the emails look totally fine (Gmail and not funky looking), but the usernames are in style of ” 5cb61a1c51d4d8″

I posted this question on reddit, but they only suggest it’s spam and to use more anti-spam plugins. But these new users emails are all normal looking, only the usernames are the strange letter/number combos.

It’s a new site so I’m opening registration to all, not using the verification feature (at the moment). But what should I make from this? I can check the origin of where people signed up maybe, but I am not convinced it’s bots. So far it’s just about 10 of them like this.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Try registering for your own site with a throw-away email account or the account of a friend to see if for some reason legit usernames are getting changed to that number-letter combination.

I’ve had lots of spam comments on my website that appear to come from legit Gmail addresses but with strange looking usernames. I wouldn’t rule out bots/spam completely.

I would implement something like reCAPTCHA to make sure you have legit users registering.

Thanks, I just tried and it used the normal username.

But I also have option to register thru Facebook or Google. If they sign up those routes their real name would appear (you know?) or maybe that’s what’s happening?

I’ll add the reCAPTCHA and other plugins.
