    I have a wordpress blog at apocalypsevintage.com/blog/alix
I was trying to upgrade from 2.7 to 3 and the installation failed partway through. Unfortunately the backup I had thought completed also did not go through.
I made a backup copy of the blog, reinstalled a fresh version of 2.7 then copied the old wp_content folder and the wp_config file into it. Now the front end of the blog works fine, looks just like it did before, but the backend is super sparse and has no way to edit any of the settings in the blog.
    Here’s a screenshot:

Are there other files I can copy over from my post-failure-backup to get this working properly?
Or another way to import my old content and themes and everything?

    Thanks

Are you sure you are logged in as an administrator in that screen-cap?

My account should be an administrator account, at least it was before.

That definitely looks like a Subscriber’s Dashboard, not an Administrator’s.

Your account may have lost admin privileges for some reason.

    Access your database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), go to the wp_users table and find the row for your user_login . Note the ID of this row. Now, go to the wp_usermeta table and find the wp_capabilities row for your user_id . Set the value of this row to a:1:{s:13:"administrator";b:1;}

Ok, so it took a while to get the info about this. Apparently my account was the only admin account, and the database encrypts the password, so there’s no way to access the database…

you need login on host account then follow what james suggested.

wait, what database are you referring to?

You said in original question that you can not log in as admin and james suggested what you need to do is change your user in wordpress database to admin so that can log in as admin.

I got that part, what I’m confused about is what database? I don’t see any file in any of the directories called “wp_user” nor any of those other names.

you need to click on phpmyadmin from your cpanel it is not in any directory.
When you log in cpanel you will see all icons one of them down is phpmyadmin click on it
you will come to list of database
one of them is wordpress database.

so the problem is that the password to the database is encrypted

is there any way to install wp3 and import the old files?
