Related Posts not showing up

That should be the JSON output of all of the related posts we have for https://apxgears.com.br/faca-o-seu-pre-registro-para-jogar-o-gears-pop/ but we’ve got a parse error in there.

And that appears to be the case throughout: https://apxgears.com.br/novidades-de-gears-5-tudo-o-que-sabemos-ate-agora/?relatedposts=1

You’re on the latest Jetpack and the latest WordPress, PHP 7, and I don’t see any connection issues between your site and us.

Would you please deactivate every plugin except Jetpack and see if there’s any difference at https://apxgears.com.br/faca-o-seu-pre-registro-para-jogar-o-gears-pop/?relatedposts=1 or https://apxgears.com.br/novidades-de-gears-5-tudo-o-que-sabemos-ate-agora/?relatedposts=1 ?

If there is an improvement, please re-activate each plugin individually until you find the one causing the problem.

If there is no improvement, please see if there’s any change under the Twenty Nineteen theme.

In short, something on your site is breaking JSON output, so we need to narrow down if that’s a plugin (and if so which) or your theme.

I did as you said and by deactivating every plugin I finally got to the problem one: Polylang.

When Polylang is activated the related posts block does not load, but as soon as I deactivate it Jetpack’s everything works fine.

I suppose it is not something you guys can fix, right? Anyway I am contacting the Polylang devs to let them know about the problem.

Hope to see the incompatibilities worked out soon.

Yeah, since the problem is JSON output from the site being broken, there isn’t much we can do here. Essentially the problem is introduced before Jetpack does anything.

Our best bet here is for Polylang to introduce a fix.

@macmanx Could you clarify what’s wrong in the JSON of https://apxgears.com.br/faca-o-seu-pre-registro-para-jogar-o-gears-pop/?relatedposts=1. It looks good to me but I don’t know what to look at.

Do you know if something has recently changed in the way related posts are handled? The last time something was modified in Polylang about this compatibility was the PR proposed by Steve Kaeser: https://github.com/polylang/polylang/pull/135

@chouby actually the Polylang is deactivated right now in my site due to the problem. That is the reason that you can not see the issue.

When saw the issue, the JSON output was just a general parse error.

Now the JSON output still syntaxely correct, but there the items are empty:

It looks to me that Polylang filters out all related posts, when the goal is to filter the posts to keep only the current language.

@macmanx Do you know if something changed since Steve Kaeser made his PR 2 years ago? The only interaction of Polylang with related posts should be the function there: https://github.com/polylang/polylang/blob/2.6.1/modules/plugins/jetpack.php#L119-L123, hooked to jetpack_relatedposts_filter_filters.

Nothing has changed for it in quite some time, it should still operate the same: https://developer.jetpack.com/hooks/jetpack_relatedposts_filter_filters/

Now that the parse error is cleared, I’ve kicked off a full re-sync of the site, just in case. It will take up to 24 hours to complete. Maybe we’ll get lucky and it won’t be empty for that post after. ??
