Related Posts widget

  • I must be missing something here because I can’t believe this can be so difficult. I have tried numerous plugins/widgets but cannot get this simple scenario to work.

    Quite simply, I want a sidebar widget to display posts relating to the categories of the currently displayed post. I can find plenty but done that take into account that the current post may belong to more than 1 category.

    So for example I have Post 1 which belongs to Category A and Category B
    Post 2 just belongs to Category A.
    Post 3 just belongs to Category B.

    When Post 1 is displayed I want to see both Post 2 and Post 3 under Related Posts.

    When Post 2 or Post 3 is displayed I want to see Post 1 only displayed.

    Secondary to this, I’ve always been of the mindset that the sidebar Related Posts should work from listing posts based on matching category. I see there are plugins however that use algorithms to achieve this – what is the general thought here – am I placing too much emphasis on trying to list items based on category and should I just let it try and work out what are the related posts? What do most people do? Thanks again.
