We have the MailChimp forms plugin installed on our WordPress site and linked to our MailChimp database via the API.

We have an Easy Mailchmp Signup Form on our website wherein users can opt to receive mailings for events that are “local” or “west of the Rockies.” There are Groups defined in MailChimp that map to those choices.

There is a single list managed by MailChimp, Segmented into local “members” and “west of the Rockies.”

However: MailChimp does not give us the choice of mailing to a Group, only to a Segment.

    * This plugin only gives the user the option to choose a Group. Our Segments do not show up as an option in the plugin.

I have read the MailChimp documentation on Segments and Groups. It does not answer my question. We need to automatically map subscription to a Group to a Segment so that we can point-and-click our target audience for a campaign. How is this accomplished? Thank you.

    Hi Hafizullah,

Our plugin supports interest groups as a method of splitting up lists into groups based on a selection set at signup. Assigning groups to a list should generate the fields on the front end, allowing your users to essentially segment themselves.

We haven’t built in support specifically for segments, but only for interest groups at the moment. We can have a look for the next release at including segments into the plugin.

You can however send targeted emails to interest groups based on the interest groups they have selected. Make sure you select ‘Send to a new segment’, where you can select which interest groups you’d like to target.

Yes, we want our subscribers to self-select themselves into the arbitrary “regions” we have defined as “Seattle/Western Washington” and “West of the Rockies.” So far, so good.

But poring over the MailChimp docs, I don’t see an easy way to select the subscribers’ Group as a target for a campaign. The available option is Segments, not Groups.

I spoze I could set a merge operator in the campaign template, but our users — those who will be creating the campaigns — aren’t particularly technically sophisticated, and the MailChimp UI is just not as “discoverable” or intuitive as maybe it could be. So Groups are a great idea, but not really very helpful in this case… Unless I’m missing something (which is quite possible).

If there were some intelligence in the back end that would automagically assign a subscriber to one of our Segments based on the Group they choose — OR someone can ‘splain me how to use the campaign UI do a targeted mailing based on Groups — I’d be very happy and we can close this topic. Otherwise, the plugin creates as many problems as it solves. Help me here…..

    Hi,

Please check the reference image in my previous response.

You can select ‘Send to new segment’, and target a set of users from a given list based on interest groups they had selected when they filled out the form.

You can also read the top blurb, which has another image to help you.

Otherwise I would reach out to the MailChimp support team and ask them for support on targeting specific interest groups for email campaigns. They should be able to send you some documentation on how to achieve it.

    Thanks,
    Evan

To clarify, the following screenshot is setting up an email campaign and targeting a set of users based on interest groups selected.

    Send to interest groups

That would be sending an email campaign to users of the ‘Example Pre Populated Field‘ mailing list, who have selected an area of interest with value of either 1 or 3.

Anyone who had selected 2, would not receive an email from this campaign.

    Thanks,
    Evan

    Thank you.

This is helpful for ME but possibly too complicated for my users, who pretty-much need a “1, 2, 3” pushbutton process with as few steps and choices as possible.

We’ll your users should only have to fill out the form. When your sending emails that is when the groups come into play.

Sorry…. I should have been more precise in my terminology.

My “users” are those composing and sending campaigns. My “subscribers” are those filling-out the webform and assigning themselves to a Group.
