Remove an image from a gallery

    I am unable to remove an image from a gallery post. I have a gallery format post and I want to delete one of the images, but leave the remaining. On the Insert Media screen, I select the “uploaded to this post”, and I see the 6 images. If I click on the one I want to delete, and choose “Clear” at the bottom of the screen, it does not delete the image. If I select “all” of the images, and say “edit selection” , then choose the “-” icon on that image, it “appears” to delete the image, as all of the others are shown. But this change does not get saved to the post.

    How can I delete the single image?

  • Hi Janet. Welcome to the Hueman forum. Although not very intuitive, there is a way:

    1. Go to your Media Library
    2. Select the list view
    3. In the “Uploaded to” column, click Detach

    You can also attach images to posts by clicking “Attach” and then selecting the post in the popup list.

    Hello!

    Thank you so much for the very prompt reply. I followed your steps, but there is no “detach” link in the “Uploaded to” column. For the “unattached” images, there is an “attach” link, but nothing for those already attached. I am using 4.4 WP, not 4.4.1, is there a difference?

    I would attach a screenshot, but no way to do that.

    Can you describe how you created the gallery on the post?

    Hi,
    I created a new post, selected the “Gallery” Format in the Format section. Then used the “Add Media” button under “Format: Gallery”.

    I then uploaded the images using the “Upload Tab”. Then I selected the “Uploaded to this post” in the dropdown to see the images attached and to re-order them. I did not use the “insert into post” button. I only used the “Insert Media” section of the upload popup.

    The process you described for attaching the posts is correct. But in the media library, under the “Uploaded to” column, it should show the name of the post and “Detach” for those images. What about media files that you’ve just uploaded into your media library, but not to a specific post? Do they show “(Unattached)” and “Attach”? You mentioned that you were running WP 4.4. I’m on 4.4.1 but don’t know if that’s something that changed with the last update.

    Honestly, there is no “unattach” link. There IS an “attach” link for the items that are not attached to a post. I can update to 4.4.1 and see if there is a change.

    Indeed THAT was the problem! I’ve upgraded to 4.4.1, and the “detach” link is there! Fantastic!
