Remove /category/ from slug

    Hi,
    How can I remove the /category/ from slug without the use of a plugin?
    I tried to add /%category%/%postname%/ in settings>>permalinks and change Category Base to period/dot, but although this removes /category/ from category urls, it adds the category name between the domain and blog posts slug, so it’s not a solution.
