Remove country code from default URL

I’m using two languages in my website, one is Portuguese and the other one is English.
I’ve noticed that in the default language the code “PT” is added in the URL.

I would like my site’s urls to be like this:

site.pt/artigo (Default version, in Portuguese)
site.pt/en/article (English version)

not like this:

site.pt/pt/artigo (Default version, in Portuguese)
site.pt/en/article (English version)

Is there anyway to “fix” this?
