• I want to have only custom widgets on categories and single posts… but I can’t seem to figure out how to get rid of them.

No matter what I tinker with, categories and posts still show up with Recent posts, Category and Archive in the sidebar.

I would really appreciate some pointers as to where in the theme files specifically those are located, so I can get rid of them ??

Is contents of the following of you wants?

    • Hide Default Recent post list and category list and archive list on category page and single page.
    • Set widget item on only category item and single page.

Please do the following if it.

    1.Open customize page.
2.Move to category or single page.
    3.Select “widget” on left menu.
    4.Set widget to “Sidebar(Post)”.

When you set any widget to “Sidebar(post)”, default “Recent post list” and “category list” and “Archive list” will no longer be displayed.

If you have the latest WordPress install 4.2 you should be able just to go into your Widgets and drag them out. I would drag out all of the widgets and then replace them with the ones you want.
