Thanks for the reply. Please note, that there are NO emoticons, ONLY text showing on my install.
I have tested it on my test site and found the emoticons are working fine without any issue.
You can just try on your development site deactivating all other plugins and using default WordPress theme like Twenty Thirteen as displayed in the following flowchart to know which theme/ plugin is conflicting if any.

I tried troubleshooting the issue on your site https://afc.test-lca-website.com/support/web-chat/ but found you are not using this chat plugin but anything else.
Please advise.
What is odd is when I look at the greyed out emoticons option, it does show ‘disabled’ by default.
I can see it is displaying Enabled for “Bottom corner chat” and disabled for “In post chat options” as shown in the following screenshots but it’s working fine for both. I have notified the plugin developer to change the default grayed out emoticons option appropriately.
