Remove empty "featured box"

In the “general options,” I only wan to use three of the five available “featured boxes.” As the fineprint says, I left the fields empty for featured box 1 and 5. However, on the website it shows the empty dashed-line circle where the image would have been revealed, instead of absolutely nothing. How do I remove the empty circle? Thank you!!
