Remove event and location URL base?

There are a number of ways to remove the category base in your wordpress urls, but it seems harder to remove event and location bases. If I change these fields to a single slash, the URLs will appear to be correct when I click through from the admin, but they’ll generate a 404 error. In fact, all permalinks will break this way.

Is there a way to remove the events and locations permalink base without breaking the site?
