• I’m feeling a bit dumb right now. I created my own problem and don’t know how to resove it.

I have used wordpress for a number of years. In each case I used it as a CMS to just build a website for myself or for a few business sites. They all have been basic websites w/o any blog associated with it so I’ve never set up to do “Posts”. I just create pages that almost never change.

I’m now creating a blog for myself. Instead of doing some serious research I “assumed” I could set it up. So I created a home page, a gallery page (that will be managed outside of the blog) and a blog page “ramblings”. I then poped into categories and foolishly (I think foolishly) set up categories listing “ramblings” as the parent. I don’t remember making “ramblings” also a category but it does appear in my category list. Now I THINK, that ramblings should probably not be in the category list and that all the categories would be parented in the “Menu” tab. So I went in to try and remove it from the category list but there is not remove/trash option for the pagename “ramblings” all the other categories have that option.

So the question becomes, did I really screw up or should the “Page Name” (rambllings) be in the category list? I really don’t want to continue of if I’m just going to have to rip it all out and start over again.

    Site details:

    Current revision of WP
Free version of “Fabulous Fluid” theme
    Max Mega Menu (Pro Version)

Not sure anything else is necessary but I always see a request for the link though I’m not sure how that will help in this case but it’s bcsjournal.com if anyone cares.

Can anyone help with this? I’m sure it’s an easy solution but I can’t find it through google.

    Thank you,

    Bruce

  • Hi, Bruce (@bicartwright).

So I went in to try and remove it from the category list but there is not remove/trash option for the pagename “ramblings” all the other categories have that option.

If you visit Settings → Writing in your WordPress admin, is the “Ramblings” category selected there for the Default Post Category option? If so, then that’s why you aren’t being given an option to delete it from the list of categories.

So, if you simply choose a different category for that setting (and save the change), then you should be able to delete the Ramblings category after that.

    Hi Girlieworks,

It is and I changed it as you instructed and the problem is solved. And now I know something I didn’t yesterday ??

Quick question if you have a moment for one. Think a “Y or N” will do: Can you have a page and a category name the same?

Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Hi again, Bruce. A category and a page can have the same name as long as you’ve not done anything which disables the category base (such as with a plugin) for category permalinks.

i.e., If you have both a category and a page named “Ramblings”, the category permalink will look like this (where “category” is the base):

    https://example.com/category/ramblings

and the page permalink will look like this:

    https://example.com/ramblings

    which would be okay.

But if you’ve done something which disables (removes) the category base, then both the category and the page would end up using the same URL (the last example above), and that would cause problems.

    Hi Girlieworks,

Thank you so much, I’m learning more and more about this each day. It’s time for me to set up a local site and dig in.

    Thank uyou again,
