Remove target="_blank" on WhatsApp button

How can I remove target=”_blank” on the Whatsapp Share Button? If I open the whatsapp url in a new window Chrome on Android 5 can’t handle the whatsapp:// scheme. Without target=”_blank” it opens WhatsApp.
