Removed a user. Adding a new user with same e-mail won't work

One of my admins has left the company so I removed her user from the account.
Now we have a new admin and I am trying to add her as a user.
However, as we give them the e-mail addresses they need to use the new admins address happens to be the same as the old. When I try this I just get an error saying that the e-mail address is already in use.
What can I do about this? Just changing the original admins user name would be good enough too, but it won’t let me do that either!
Any help would be appreciated.
