removed multisite; now receiving new user emails

I recently removed the multisite option from my website reshelter.org. Now, all of a sudden, I am getting emails notifying me that my new site has been created and giving me my username and password. Why is this happening – it makes no sense to me why this would suddenly activate itself when it was removed a couple weeks ago.
