I only want to give my client’s access to an events plugin so that they can add events to their website calendar. However, I realized that taking away their access to the Dashboard messes things up when they login.

So I gave them access to the Dashboard and Dashboard – Home page, but not the Updates page. However, their account still sees an error upon login that says, “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this admin page.”

I see that they are being directed to /wp-admin/profile.php upon login. If I drop the url to just /wp-admin then they can see the Dashboard Home page and the Events plugin just fine.

Is there a way to restrict access to the Updates page without causing this error?

    Thanks in advance!

I can’t seem to reproduce this on a test site. If I hide “Dashboard -> Updates”, I can still log in without errors.

What role do these clients have? Is it one of the default roles (like Administrator), or something custom?

Also, does the site have any login redirection plugins installed? It would be useful to know why they get redirected to the profile page. Normally WP unconditionally redirects everyone to the Dashboard upon login, and AME does not change that.

I’m using a custom role called “Staff”, which I created using the White Label Branding plugin. I deactivated that plugin while I configure the menus with AME, but I felt like it could still be interfering so I went ahead and deleted it since I wasn’t using it yet (other than to create the Staff user role). After deleting the plugin, the Staff role is still available though.

I did try to redirect the Dashboard to the Events menu using the AME plugin, but it gave me an error after logging in, so I went back and selected “undo changes” to reverse that.

I’m afraid my Staff role may be the source of the problem somehow. I’m also curious to know what is causing the redirect.

I re-assigned my test user to an Editor role, and gave them the same access and the login worked just fine. My Staff role was obviously messed up somehow.

    Sorry for the trouble!
