    You shouldn’t if you’re using subfolder installs. it’s hardcoded it.

    (You CAN change it via network admin -> Sites -> Edit Site and then remove it from the permalink settings, but if you EVER save your permalinks again, then the /blog bit gets put back in).

    so if I do with subdomains then /blog part would go bye bye?

    when I had the site with non-multisite, I had the /category/ issue, which got solved with a plugin.

    I was told that it is easier to do multisite than do “per category” permissions on regular WP. I didn’t want John Doe publishing on the politics section when he is only for music section (people also make mistakes when they are in a rush).

    Yes, if you use subdomains, /blog goes away. Mind, it’s ONLY there in your main site, not in any of the subsites.

    “Per Category” doesn’t really apply to MultiSite, as you’re making separate SITES, and they each have their own category.
