Removing Blog-style formatting

I am building my mother’s website and I figured out how to alter the header, and posting and whatnot isn’t a problem. Here’s what’s bugging me:

I’ve set the main page as a static page. For some reason though, (I’m not sure if it’s the theme – cute-red) the content has a date to the left and a comments line at the bottom. I think I can figure out the comments line, but I’m stumped on the blog-like date thing. I also don’t want it to say “By In Category”. I assume the “By _____” is blank because there is no particular author.

Anyway, any help you can give would be awesome. Thanks!
