removing old (archive?) articles

    I am seeing old archives in my sidebox which I do not want to be seen anymore.
    How do I remove the older articles which I cannot find in my article list? Are the archived? Where and how?
    How can I switch off the widget or edit the tmplate code which shows these “archives”?
