To edit sample page you need to go under pages(here you can edit)

To edit slider,featured areas you need to go under Appereance -> Customize -> Theme Options(here you can perform theme related changes)

I am also having difficulties with this theme. I can’t get the links to work in the 4 content areas on the featured home page.

By default we provide 3 featured content in free version of the theme. How you getting 4 th content area?
