    Hi everybody,

once freshly installed I decided my WP diary to organize uploaded files in one directory only (so wp-content/uploads is not organized by date/month/year).

Now I run into some serious problems, as there are too many files in that particular directory (app. 200.000 image files) –> backups and downloads are a major struggle!

Any of these image files is inserted in one post only, the posts itself are uniquely categorized by year. So I wonder if there’s a possible way to reorganize the structure of my upload-folder, so that files, which are in posts of year 2020, are moved to a new directory /wp-content/uploads/2020 and links to these files are updated automatically in the corresponding post…?

    Example:
100 files (images), half of them are published in post A with category “2019” and the other half in post B with cat “2020”
Actually all 100 files are located in uploads.
Afterwards I’d like to have 2 sub-folders: uploads/2019 with 50 images of post A and uploads/2020 with the 50 files of post B in it – AND: no broken links afterwards, neither!

Does anyone know a plugin that can do so? Or can someone recommend a tool for this case instead of WordPress?

    I really appreciate your help!

    Sven

    Hi @skoeck,

its tricky to change directories as it will affect your existing image links, however, if you really want to change your upload directory, you can try Search and Replace plugin. Just be very cautious because it can do a massive change which can greatly affect your links.

    Hi @piecebutechsup,
thank you for your support! I actually found and tried the plugin “media library folders” from MaxFoundry and it does the magic!
Just dragged & dropped the files to a new directory in my upload-directory –> all files were moved and my WP database was updated to the new files’ addresses…
Plugin is free, there’s also a pro version.
    Best regards

(I’m not associated with that organization, but excited ot that little piece of software)
