Scan generating a lot of 404’s.

    A single instance of:

    /wp-admin/tools.php?GOTMLS_only_file=d2hvaXMuZ3RsZC5kb3RzdGVyLnBocA3&GOTMLS_scan=L2hvbWUvanVsaWV0d3UvcHVibGljX2h0bWwvd3AtY29udGVudC9wbHVnaW5zL3dvcmRmZW5jZS9saWIvd2hvaXM2&page=GOTMLS-settings

About 40 instances per scan (various strings)

    /wp-admin/tools.php?GOTMLS_scan=GOTMLS_scan=L2hvbWUvanVsaWV0d3UvcHVibGljX2h0bWwvd3AtY29udGVudC9wbHVnaW5zL3NpLWNvbnRhY3QtZm9ybS9pbmNsdWRlcw3&page=GOTMLS-settings

This doesn’t seem to break anything other than creating the 404’s. Scans still finish, and everything else seems to work OK, reports, discovered files etc…

Seen this when scanning 2 sites on same server, so could be something to do with the server config (maybe mod_secure)?.

    Server info:
    Apache version 2.2.23
    PHP version 5.2.17
    MySQL version 5.1.70-cll
    Perl version 5.8.8

I’m marking this as “not support” – just interested in finding reasons why this is happening. It’s shared hosting so can’t do anything about changing server config.

I see by the URL you provided that you have changed the menu setting to show the plugin under the tools menu. I am curious if it makes any difference if you were to change it back to one of the other menu placement options and run the scan from there.

I would also wonder if it makes any difference what browser you use. Have you tried this in both Firefox and Chrome?

Going to try the other menu positions and different browsers over weekend.
I normally use Firefox (24.0) at present.
    Will report back

Have you had a chance to try another menu position?

Any other findings (maybe a firewall or .htaccess rules)?

Please let me know how it’s working for you now. I am happy to troubleshoot this issue for you if you want to give me WP admin access to your blog.

    @eli
Apologies for taking so long to report back – tried all the suggested options over the time and have had a lot of client work on hand so my own sites get ignored.

OK, seems it’s nothing wrong with the plugin – good news.

From what I can see it looks like it could be a server resource issue, and the 404 plugin (404 redirected) incorrectly capturing the error as a 404

What’s happening is occasionally the server returns a 500 (service unavailable error code) which 404 redirected is logging as a 404 not found error (That plugin needs updating badly)

My first thought was activity across the domain (there’s 1 primary domain – Drupal – gets quite busy) plus 4 sub-domains (2 WordPress + 2 other systems) could be exhausting allocated resources occasionally, causing the 500 error. Sometimes the scan runs 37 to 40 (maybe more) requests a minute without any error, sometimes the 500 comes up after 10 to 12.

Then I noticed when WordPress cron runs, the 500 error often occurs at the same time, but not always – so is likely a resource issue.

Sometime I should switch cron to a server trigger instead of WordPress – been on my to-do list for a while, or earn more moola so I can get my own dedicated VPS for my sites ??

Thanks for offer to take a look Eli – It’s not worth your time as I’m now certain it’s not a bug with the plugin, and the scan does complete and find the things it’s supposed to.

ok, Thanks for the follow-up. I agree with your conclusion that it’s a server resource issue.

I think that “404 redirected” plugin has a lot of potential but it does need to spend some more time the hands of a good developer ??
