Replace current site with WordPress – steps?

I currently have a site https://www.mysite.com and I made a wordpress site in another folder and built it up. I want to replace the current site with the wordpress site.

I figure just move the files over into the public html area and take out the existing index file.

I assume I need to make another data base for the site to work in the root area of my site? This is where I’m unsure and I want to do it right the first time.

I also think I need to change the permalinks in the wordpress general settings.

Can anybody guide me a little here, I don’t want to mess this up! Thanks!!!
