• Whenever readers post comments from their devices that include emojis, they end up being ???? question marks when the posts are approved.
It would be really great if the emojis would appear as intended instead of looking unsightly and confusing to others.

By and large, the latest versions of WordPress do have full emoji support. They even work on these forums. ??

But, showing them is largely dependent on your theme and site itself. Do you have an example of a comment with an emoji that fails to show up properly?

Hi there, usually I edit them out but here’s a recent one I forgot to do:

Emojis from other devices always show up as question marks. My own display correctly because I’m using my desktop browser and type in the punctuation, the old fashioned way ??
    The theme is Atahualpa 3.7.24.
    Appreciate your time …

First steps, try the Health Check plugin. It has some things that will let you disable plugins and use default themes but only for you, not for the actual live site. This will let you test and see if any of those steps will show that character as the correct ones without changing anything drastically.

If that doesn’t help, then it is possible that your database has a character encoding issue. That’s a much more complicated problem to solve. This is somewhat more likely if your site has existed for a long time and you’ve been upgrading it repeatedly for many years.

My site started eight years ago (2010), so “upgrading repeatedly” definitely applies. Guess I’ll just accept that emojis don’t work and edit them out as needed. Haven’t used the Health Check plugin, will put it on my “to do” list! Many thanks for your help.
