Hi everyone. I’m trying to design my first WordPress theme, and I’m confused as to whether I have to include stuff like the wp calendar and those types of things in my css file, if I don’t really utilize them in my theme. The Codex seems to say that there are certain things that have to be included, but it’s not all that specific, and I can’t find a hard and fast list of stuff that has to be in every theme’s template files and css file. Thanks in advance.

If it is only for yourself, include what you need.
If you want to make it available to others? There is no end to what to include. One theme can’t cover it all.
Studying this forum’s hot topics, I would say:
    1. Easy change of header image.
    2. Easy control over menu’s for categories and pages, also mixed in one block.
    3. Easy Social buttons (widget)
    4. Good control over images and (video) embeds in posts.
    5. .. you name it
