Woocommerce is great! but this is a problem.

We are using the WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin. When a purchaser using a credit card from the USA while in different country, the purchaser can only enter phone country code from different country. So it is not possible to complete the transaction. See image.

Strange thing, sometimes a phone number is required sometimes not. Using a incognito or private window seems to make the requested phone number go away. (but it is not dependent on which card is chosen, is the same with my Frost USA card or my K-Bank Thailand card)

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello @wp1ok

Thanks for reaching out to us, we’re here to help.

The phone number field behavior you described is influenced by how PayPal handles these fields within their system. Our plugin essentially displays these fields through an iframe, which is hosted and controlled by PayPal, not our plugin.

The best course of action to address this issue would be to contact PayPal Merchant Support directly. They will be able to provide more detailed assistance and potentially explain the inconsistency you’re experiencing.

Thank you for your understanding, and please let us know if there’s anything else we can help with.

    Kind Regards,

    Krystian

    Hello @wp1ok

A small update from my side:

By default, PayPal Payments will send the data from the billing fields to PayPal when clicking the black “Debit or Credit Cards” button. As a result, PayPal will only ask for card details, and no billing details.
When sending e.g. USA as the billing country but the shop does not provide a phone number field, then PayPal would request a US phone number.

To set different billing data in PayPal compared to WooCommerce, the?Send checkout billing data to card fields?setting must be configured with?Do not use WC checkout form data (request all address fields).

But this would cause PayPal to every time ask the user to provide additional information which they may already have provided in the checkout form fields before clicking the button. Please keep that in mind.

The best workaround for this situation would be to use Advanced Card Processing. PayPal doesn’t require buyers to provide any additional information with the gateway.

Hope it clarifies some additional confusion, and I’m sorry for not pointing it our in my previous response.

    Kind regards,
    Krystian

Thanks for your replies and info Krystian,

Seems the most logical solution would be if the WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin had a pull down list, where the purchaser could just select a different phone country code to match their card. Seems that would be simple implement into their plugin and would solve the problem.

Additional note: the phone number entered on the billing fields doesn’t send the phone number to the Paypal transaction. If it did that would solve the problem, although the purchaser can not select a phone country code on the phone billing field, it is just a text box.

    Hello @wp1ok

The key issue here is that this gateway is displayed and managed entirely by PayPal, so any modifications would need to be addressed directly with them. Unfortunately, from the plugin’s perspective, we are unable to implement any updates.

    Thanks again Krystian,

Hopefully the people responsible for the WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin read this forum.

After giving this some more thought, it seems that it is not only travelers in other countries this could be a problem for. Major US banks allow for people to use a foreign phone number for their bank account, so this could be a problem for many people, even while in the US.

The WooCommerce PayPal Payments had an update yesterday.
And they didn’t fix this major problem !!! ???

    Hello @wp1ok

Unfortunately, this is not something we can directly fix within the WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin. If you have further doubts or concerns, I would recommend reaching out directly to PayPal Merchant Support, as they are best equipped to address issues related to payment gateway behaviors.

If PayPal considers this behavior unintended, they would be the ones to propose a solution or fix it.

    Kind Regards,
