required setting for form field not saved

i need to make a custom form field required – the popup appears, saying the settings had been saved, but it doesn’t really change the setting – as soon as i reload the settings page, the required checkbox is unchecked again and it never changes in the frontend.
Doesn’t matter if I try with a textarea or input type.
