I signed up for a paid subscription this, and when I was trying to activate the product it asked me to share a bunch of data, including all my posts, pages, user data and other items. This isn’t necessary to host videos, and I would be breaking the privacy laws in multiple jurisdictions to share this without informing my users and given there’s no good reason for this for VideoPress in order to serve videos, I can’t justify sharing user data.

Is there a way to activate without this?

    Hi,

I understand that you don’t share data with others, but I would be sharing data with you that as far as I can ascertain is not needed to provide a video service. The fact that vimeo or youtube does not demand user data is proof of this.

    Your gdpr page says

We respect the GDPR’s principles of minimizing the amount of data we collect,

which is an outright lie as you are colleting much more information than you need to deliver this service.

    Hi @jamescl

Based on the way Jetpack works, the data that we collect is necessary to provide the service. Vimeo and YouTube are different products that work differently than Jetpack.

If you do not wish to share this data with Jetpack, you will need to look for a different service.

Your squeeze page makes direct comparisons with Vimeo and YouTube – https://jetpack.com/videopress/ , so I had assumed that you could directly compare the products.

It seems strange to me to design a product that collects more data than necessary to deliver the particular service (i.e. video hosting) – and to me seems like a breach of data privacy principles, but I guess I’ll have to choose a different product.

I’ll share the feedback with our product team.
