    Hello,

I’ve been using the free version of your plugin for a while. Today, I just configured the email option using GMAIL. The test emails work fine – I’m receiving them. However, when logging in I am only presented with the option to use the authenticator app code (or a backup code). There is no option to select to receive a code via email, and no email has been sent to the inbox automatically. Furthermore, I do not see a resend button (perhaps this is normal for the email option, and only available for SMS and other).

I’d appreciate understanding why I’m not being given an option to receive a code via email, as having another means to authenticate (besides the backup codes) is critical.

In fact, while I’m at it, is there some way to copy the backup codes again. I can’t seem to find these on the system?

The option settings for 2FA are as follows:

‘Which of the below 2FA methods can users use?

    Select the methods

    Primary 2FA methods:
?One-time code via 2FA App (TOTP) – SELECTED
?One-time code via email (HOTP) – ensure email deliverability with the free plugin?WP Mail SMTP. – SELECTED

Allow user to specify the email address of choice? – NO

As can be seen, I permit a one time code using TOTP and now want HOTP (test emails work fine, but I have *not* enabled the usage of emails of choice as I want the code to go to only the one specific email address). There is no option on login screen to obtain a code via email.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Thank you for using our plugin.

I’m afraid I can’t understand the issue. You said “Today, I just configured the email option using GMAIL”- does this mean you have configured 2FA for your user account using the wizard? I’m asking this question because it seems you have the 2FA app configured already, and you cannot have both configured.

Also, when you are using 2FA over email you get an option to resend code.

Would you please be able to explain the issue in more detail because I can’t understand what the issue is exactly. If you can add screenshots / screen recordings that would help. If you do not want to share such information on this public forum, please send us an email at [email protected]. Please refer to this ticket in your email.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the reply.

Basically, I have been using Google Authenticator to generate a code to log in. However, yesterday I opted to try and setup the option to receive a code via email. However, when I’m presented with the login screen I am still only given the option to login with Google Authenticator, and have no option to log in using email, and I do not receive a code via email.

Furthermore, there is no resend button (never has been). This is the message I receive at login:

‘Please enter the two-factor authentication (2FA) verification code below to login. Depending on your 2FA setup, you can get the code from the 2FA app or it was sent to you by email.

Note: if you are supposed to receive an email but did not receive any, please click the Resend Code button to request another code.

And yes, I did follow the setup wizard and installed the recommended SMTP plugin and used the option for GMAIL.

So, here’s the problem, if I understood you correctly. I wanted the email option just in case I have a problem with the authenticator app. As my phone went faulty recently, I could have been unable to log into the site (having no access to the authenticator). Fortunately, I was able to use another phone and retrieve the authenticator codes when reinstalling the app.

However, I was hoping setting up the email would allow me the **choice** of receiving the code by either email or via the authenticator – this would be ideal.

    Hello Stvace,

Ok, now I understand what you need etc. No, you cannot have multiple different 2FA methods at the same time. With the Free edition you can have either 2FA over APP or 2FA over email, they cannot be set up together.

As a backup you have the backup codes. So I’d recommend configuring the backup codes so if the first method is not available, like in your case the mobile app, you can log in with the backup codes.

I hope the above clarifies things. If you have further questions or no need assistance please let us know.

    Have a great day.

Thanks for the clarification. I’ll keep this in mind and consider what other options may be availble. all the best.
