I ask because my blog photos are 1000 wide, and my thumbs are only 400 wide. I am looking for a plugin that will replace every featured image (existing, and those with no featured image currently), but taking the first image in the post, cropping it to 400*300 dimensions and save it to the server as the featured image.

FYI, i am doing this reduce the massive size of my homepage which is currently pulling huge images and simply shrinking them down to show as the thumb, and not creating new images with a much smaller size.

    Thanks guys,
    Mike

Hi Mike, Quick Featured Images leave the image sizes untouched and does not change any image size. But it is the right tool to set, remove and replace featured images for thousands of posts within minutes.

The premium version has the ability to pick up the first post content image and set it as featured. Here is the shop of the Pro version: https://quickfeaturedimages.com/

For your case it makes sense to use it and other plugins for changing the image sizes:

    1. “Settings” > “Media” for new image sizes – that will affect only new images, not the existing ones. So:
    2. “Regenerate thumbnails” to set the existing images to the new image sizes
    3. “Imsanity” for scaling down big image files on the server and each new image

This way you can gain new server space.
