Reverse DNS lookups are not implemented in WP Statistics due to performance issues and relatively little merit in the data (most users come from programmatically generated DNS entries created by their service provider).

Thanks for the very quick reply!

I understand that doing reverse DNS could have a big impact on performance, yet some might want to do it and tackle the performance aspect in other ways (dns caching, etc.).

You could possibly also restrict the reverse DNS lookups to countries of interest based on GeoIP first to strip down excessive traffic…

All possible but significant work to implement with little call for it so unlikely to be implemented.

What are you trying to get from the host names?

It’s something that you can get from Google statistics and others and would still be interesting to know sometimes if familiar domains pop up.

Yet another way to go about it could be to have a list of domains of interest and then create a corresponding list of IP-ranges based on that and use it as a filter and get a sub report of visited pages etc. based on it.

This could help you to improve the content and structure of your site for a targeted audience based on the filtered statistics.

We’ll keep it in mind, but as I said it isn’t high on the priority list at this time.

    Thanks for the feedback.
