I have used Tablepress for many years to display products on my ecommerce site, and finally I’m reworking my wordpress site to be responsive. I’m working from the twenty twelve theme. Unfortunately I’m not getting the results I’m wanting with TablePress responsive tables.

I have my table set to [table id=1 responsive=”phone” /]. With my desktop web browser at full size the table looks great as a 3 column wide table. As I shrink the browser window the table pops to 4 columns wide (with the far right column cut off) and remains 4 columns wide at the minimum browser size, forcing me to scroll horizontally to see the rest of the content. My hope was that the table would adjust to a two column wide table on the smallest (mobile size) browser—pushing the content down instead of cutting it off on the right. Here’s the test site I’m working on: https://play.witandwhistle.com/shop/greeting-cards/

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

I see what you mean, but what you describe is the designed way for the Responsive Tables Extension to work. It flips the table to the side and makes it scrollable.

Now, this approach however is only really suitable for data tables (like the example tables on the Extension’s web site). It’s not that good for tables with images, as in your case.

The problem with tables on the web basically is that they have a fixed rows and columns structure. Thus, it’s not possible to suddenly show the table in only two instead of three columns ??

If you stick to a table, horizontal scrolling (maybe without the flipping, as the approach from https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/responsive-tables-scroll-only?replies=6#post-5511954 can do) is the only real option. If you prefer to show the data in two or three columns (depending on the screen size), you will have to move away from an actual table and re-create that layout with other HTML elements, like <div> containers and some CSS code for that.

Sorry for not having better news here.

    Regards,
    Tobias

Thanks so much for your speedy response, Tobias. I’m sad that TablePress and I will have to part ways. You’ve done an excellent job with this plugin, and it has served me well over the years!

    Hi,

yeah, there are use cases, where tables are not the best solution, and your layout of those product is one of them :-/

I hope that you can find a good alternative!

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

Yes, please send it to me via email then. The address is in the main plugin file “tablepress.php”. Just to be sure, have you tried e.g. the responsiveness approaches from https://tablepress.org/extensions/responsive-tables/ or https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/responsive-tables-scroll-only?replies=6#post-5511954 ?

    Regards,
    Tobias
