• Hello, I hope someone can help me.

On Monday my website was hacked and the whole thing was taken down by my hosting company. Back up and running and I installed a new version of WP and the theme I was using, and using the cPanel restore feature have restored my database. I can see all my posts, pages, and such like in Dashboard, although have lost all the design elements such as background colours etc. However, I am at a loss as to how to get the site functional again. Logging in to lorrequer.com I get the Home page fine, the menus work, but I get error messages on all the pages – page unavailable.

How do I get all the pages to ‘link’ back together again in the menu? I am using the Thesis theme and not sure if I should be asking this question in their forum or here. Frankly I have been so frazzled over this whole exercise that it might be a simple solution that I am not seeing at the moment.

I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can offer at this point before I tear all my hair out.

    Lin

  • Hi lorrequer,

So sorry to hear you’re going through this. I know it’s frustrating.j

To get your design elements back, you’ll need to make sure that you also restore your wp-content/themes folder to your server.

If you’re getting 404 errors when you try to access your site pages, the most likely cause is an issue with your site’s .htaccess file. Try changing your Permalinks to something different, save the changes & then change back to your original Permalink structure and save again.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response Christi. Unfortunately now I have an error trying to log in to wp-admin at all, so I am taking everything down and will start afresh.

I do have a question – I have a Full Backup of my website in a tar.gz file, and I also have MySql backs. I restored the Msql backups to the server. I have expanded the Full backup and have it in Filezilla.

So to start afresh, do I re-instal new copies of WP onto the server and then do a backup (it will be through FTP) or should I just FTP everything up and then update WP). I was running the latest copy of WP and my theme at the time I was hacked so my brain is thinking this through as I type – perhaps I should just FTP everything back to the server?

    Hi lorrequer,

If you’ve already restored your database, you should be able to clear out the files in your document root and then upload your backup files to the document root.

    Hope this helps!
