Restoring Blog

I have manually installed 3.0.1 and now have access to the dashboard, but it shows as a new installation, rather than linking to the database on my host server – ie no posts or settings.
As the database still exists, should I be able to link to it to restore the posts and settings or do I have to use a back-up? I don’t really want to overwrite the exisitng db if I don’t have to.
