• I have manually installed 3.0.1 and now have access to the dashboard, but it shows as a new installation, rather than linking to the database on my host server – ie no posts or settings.

As the database still exists, should I be able to link to it to restore the posts and settings or do I have to use a back-up? I don’t really want to overwrite the exisitng db if I don’t have to.

WP connects to the database with the info in your wp-config.php file. If it points to your database correctly – it will use it.

The wp-config.php file is as it was. Could the issue be the password I use to log in to the WP dashboard? I changed it from the password given by my host as it came up as ‘weak’ when the new installation message appeared. Do I need to change the password back again on WP?

    that really shouldn’t matter
if the db still exists and matches what is in wp-config.php you will need to ask the host what’s up.
