I have gotten myself in a problem by deleting a user who had created a large number of faq on my site. Fortunately I have a backup which has all this content. It is not a backup I can restore the entire site with… it isn’t fresh enough but it is fresh enough to take care of the missing faq.
I am not having luck finding something in the forum… I did discover the faq are stored in wp_posts and that they appear to be well and truly gone. This surprised me a bit because I was able to restore other “posts” from the post menu on my dashboard. I also note that pages rolled back nicely.
It would have been much kinder to either save the content in a “trash” category and provided for restoring it to draft or publish.
What I need help with now is retrieving the faq from the backup… set up another site using the backup, export excel, import… or is there and easier way? Perhaps even a paid way?

  • Hi pamjasperx,

    Thanks for contacting us.

Unfortunately, this is more of a WordPress issue than an issue with our plugin, which means we don’t have much control over restoring posts from deleted WordPress users. Our FAQs are a custom post type, which means the author functionality uses the default system that WordPress uses for its regular posts.

That being said, when you delete a user in WordPress, WordPress normally asks you what you want to do with their existing posts (transfer them to another author or delete them). Do you remember what you chose when presented with this option? (If you go to the FAQs tab in our plugin’s admin and the FAQs aren’t there, you probably chose delete and not transfer.)

If you chose transfer, then all the FAQs should be there, just with a different author name. If you chose delete, then WordPress, by default, will place those items in the trash.

So, if you go to the FAQs tab in our plugin’s admin, right under the “Add New” button at the top, you’ll see a link called “Trash” (see attached screenshot).

That is where the deleted posts would go. If you’ve emptied the trash there, then, unfortunately, there would be no way to recover the posts other than restoring your backup, as WordPress deletes the posts from the database when you empty the trash.
