I’m looking for documentation about restoring an earlier backup.

Is it simply a matter up overwriting current files with the previously backed-up versions?

If I take one of my Fantastico backups, unzip it, and upload it to my WP directory, will everything revert to the previous setup? Or are there database details that need managing as well?

    No.
    Yes.

    Okay. Thanks for the pointer.

    Two further questions:
1a. If I don’t restore the SQL data, will the contents of the blog remain as they are now?
1b. or will the blog installation be a mess due to overwriting current WP files with older ones?

    Yes/No?

    2. just to confirm: I can upload the older backup, and SQL data, and everything should be fine.

    Yes/No?

1a. the content of the blog, that is your posts, and any page content and links, are a reflection of whats inside the database tables.

1b. maybe, maybe not. thats dependent on the version of wordpress you back up to. Using wordpress 2.0.x files with a database thats been upgraded to 2.8.x, for instance, wont work, and will do what you described.

    2) if by upload the sql data, you mean go through the process of importing the backup into your database (its not a file upload, per se), yes, ideally, everything should be fine.

Ive done it hundreds of times – done correctly it works. done incorrectly, you can have a mess.

Okay. I think I can proceed successfully.
I tried using the automatic upgrade to go from 2.x to 2.8, and while the external view of the blog is fine, the interior admin layout is a mess. My webhost is still using 2.7.1, and I’m about to attempt a manual upgrade to 2.8.4 by copying over most of the old files as set out in Upgrading_WordPress_Extended. I’m happy with the current contents of the database, but have made a backup to my local drive, and will re-import it if necessary.

    Well, that didn’t work…
The installation is now at 2.8.4, and the external view is still fine, but the dashboard still looks like this.

Next step looks to be deleting the entire installation and starting over.

    Fixed.
Deleted the wp-admin folder again and uploaded again.
    Dashboard fine now.

So in answer to my own earlier question about importing older data: I left the existing SQL data in place and just copied WP installation files to the working directory.
