    Hi all,

This is the culmination of a few weeks worth of frustration my end so I’m going to give a quick background to my situation for context and then the actual question below (if you want to skip to that).

    Background for context

This is all a long story short and sums up a few weeks of a lot of frustration and pointlessly trying to learn how to use FTPs and other-such things… Essentially, due to a variety of different things me and my friend decided to end our paid hosting of our WordPress website about a month or so ago. In doing this we were planning then to just shift back to the free www.ads-software.com blog format we’d been using previously, however we had about 6 years worth of content on the site we wanted to save.

So, in my naiveté I assumed that if I installed UpdraftPlus then I would be easily able to create a backup of our site, then when the hosting ended I could just as easily restore our old www.ads-software.com site from the backup and none of the content would be missing.

Except, of course the free version of www.ads-software.com does not allow you to install external plugins, so I couldn’t get UpdraftPlus installed.

After some asking around I ended up figuring out that if I installed WordPress locally on my Mac, I could then install UpdraftPlus, restore from the backup, THEN get the the standard WordPress backup (I think made by Jetpack) in .xml format and THEN upload that to the actual website. And hopefully then all would be well…

Which leads me to where we are now (and if anyone knows how UpdraftPlus works then you may already know what I’m going to ask).

    Specific question

So, I have a local installation of WordPress and I have an UpdraftPlus back-up of my website. What I want to do is to restore my local site using the UpdraftPlus back-up of my old website so that I can THEN get an .xml of the local version and upload that to the current WordPress.com version.

I have now learned, of course, that it’s not as simple as just restoring from the back-up of my previous site but that I need to use the UpdraftPlus Migrator feature instead (as this is not a “restoration” as such and rather is a migration of my site).

So: is there any way to work around this using the local installation? For instance, I gather that the big issue is that the file scripts will be all pointing to my old website instead of the local host? Is there any way to edit these things to sort it out myself? Or any other method of converting them? Or is the ONLY option the use of UpdraftPlus Premium?

Any help massively appreciated and apologies for the wall of text.

    Hi,

UpdraftPlus use a “searchandreplacedb2.php” script to accomplish the task of replacing the old URL with the new URL. You can definitely use the script without using the Premium version.

    Hi Bryle,

I didn’t realise there was a standalone script for this, thanks for letting me know.

I have to admit, I’ve been looking into this for a little bit now and it’s super daunting, but hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to use it.

    Thanks again!

    Edit:

Editing this with some additional information. I THINK this script is exactly what I need, so this support question might technically be closed. However, I have to admit I have basically zero idea of how to actually go about using it (even when trying to follow the instructions on the website). So, rather than making another post, I am hoping that by replying here I might get some additional guidance on how to actually use the Search and Replace script on the local install.

    Hi,

You basically have to download the script and upload to your WP directory. Once uploaded you should then be able to use the script by visiting the link. ex. mydomainname.com/searchandreplacedb2.php

Then just fill in the fields shown required.

Alternatively, we created the migrator add-on so you won’t have to do all those steps. It is easier to use and you can use it in as many sites as you want.

    Regards,
    Bryle
