Restoring to previous good condition question

    UpdraftPlus Backup is done daily on a site, if the site is hacked and has virus/malware, does it mean that restoring the backup before the hacking will recover the website to the previous good state (posts/articles/images/plugin and theme settings all like when it was previously working good)? Will restoring to the backup before the hacking remove all the virus/malware?

    Is it possible to do a new full backup daily, instead of incremental backup?

    Where can I see a UpdraftPlus Backup restore guide?

    Hi gemstar,

    A restore will entirely replace the included entities – plugins/themes/database/etc. – so, if the virus infection was in one of those, then yes, restoring will get rid of it.

    You will also want to unzip a new copy of WordPress core from https://www.ads-software.com/download/, as the virus might be in there. (Or alternatively for convenience use UpdraftPlus Premium, which backs up WordPress core too).

    All backups are full backups. A future release should add incremental backups as an option, but it’s not ready yet.

    Are hacked/virus infection files usually inside the WordPress files (WordPress files that are backup by UpdraftPlus)? I mean I usually hear people saying their WordPress was hacked or Google displaying “This site may be hacked” on the result page, so I wonder if restoring UpdraftPlus backup would most probably restore the site to good condition.

    I did come across this guide https://updraftplus.com/faqs/how-do-i-restore-my-backup-from-a-site-that-is-still-installedrunning/ , is this the best restore guide? I mean is there a more detailed/step by step guide with screenshots. I was looking for guide similar like https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/ https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Posts , I am a beginner and I follow better with step by step/screenshots so I know I am doing/clicking the right thing.

    In the second screenshot at https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/updraftplus/screenshots/ , what is “Incremental file backup intervals”?

    Hi Gemstar,

    There’s a whole “restore” section in the UpdraftPlus FAQs – you’ll get a lot from looking through there, both about UD and about how WP is put together in general.

    Some hacks will modify every single .php file in your install – in core, plugins, themes, the lot.

    what is “Incremental file backup intervals”?

    An as-yet unreleased feature. The screenshot is from a pre-release version. Once it’s released, there’ll be a link to click to read more about it. It’s not in current versions.
