Restrict editor rights to certain pages

Soem peopel need to edit certain pages but it seems that if they are made editors they can edit any page.

I tried this without success:
-making them subscribers,
-creating a group that had editor roles for group members
– making them part of that group
-setting the access to a page to that group (as well as a general read only access).

I had expected that this would give then edit rights on those pages but not others.

We use User Access Manager 1.2.1
