Restrict groups in backend

Hello, I am wondering if this is possible?

My site has a lot of groups. Currently all users who are able to add a group to a page in the backend can see the full list of groups available. I’d like to be able to restrict what groups a user can see and add to a page in the backend. So they can only select from groups that apply to them… perhaps based on user role?

Can this be done?
